The Beach & Tennis Club

Perfectly placed overlooking the peaceful views of Stillwater Cove, today The Beach & Tennis Club is an exclusive enclave for the private Club’s members and Pebble Beach Resort guests. Yet the Cove’s beauty and resources have no doubt drawn admirers since before recorded history, when Native Americans first explored and fished the Monterey Peninsula.

By 1868, written records describe a Chinese fishing village near the water’s edge; and nearly 50 years later, in 1916, the Monterey Cypress newspaper reported plans under way for a pier and a modern bathhouse at the site. By 1919, the tiny fishing lodge had become “one of the finest fishing clubs in the country.” That very lodge is the basis for today’s Beach & Tennis Club building.

Over the years, many improvements and refinements have transformed the lodge into today’s elegant Club. In 1926, The Tennis Club completed three turf courts, deemed suitable for tournament play. Construction of the outdoor swimming pool finished in the mid-1930s. Yet throughout its unique history, the magnificent views and recreational opportunities have remained constant—truly beauty unchanged.
